I think that it is totally dependent on the woman. You have to make sure you are doing what you are comfortable with, because everyone is different.Heidihttp://everydayfamilies.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472399563141922488.post-54422223450668420592010-10-26T20:29:10.337-04:002010-10-26T20:29:10.337-04:00Yes, some excellent advise here, particularly abou...Yes, some excellent advise here, particularly about getting a doula, insisting on skin-to-skin and educating yourself on these seemingly safe practices that can have a real negative impact on breastfeeding!Elitahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01294923997458681675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472399563141922488.post-82307768481763838372010-10-26T19:44:40.175-04:002010-10-26T19:44:40.175-04:00I had two unmedicated, midwife-attended hospital b...I had two unmedicated, midwife-attended hospital births. But my first happened at 34 weeks, and my daughter was removed to the NICU immediately. My second happened at 39.5 weeks, and we spent our first hours skin-to-skin. No contest - being able to be together made a HUGE difference. That, and having a full-term baby. Although there's nothing I could have done about that, pre-term babies generally have a rougher start with all things, including breastfeeding.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472399563141922488.post-82748892249275335022010-10-25T11:43:47.770-04:002010-10-25T11:43:47.770-04:00I had a hospital birth, and it was quite a bit lik...I had a hospital birth, and it was quite a bit like yours! I had no idea to unwrap the baby after the nurses swaddled him -- like you, I figured skin-to-skin was something optional. It's not!

I sure hope to have the next one(s) at home. I'm sure breastfeeding would be easier. But, as you point out, there are a lot of things you can do in a hospital birth to prevent the breastfeeding sabotage that tends to happen there.Sheilahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10853868724554947854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472399563141922488.post-9026291997359345092010-10-25T10:22:02.454-04:002010-10-25T10:22:02.454-04:00Love it Jenny. I've read about the differences from women who have had a hospital birth, and from women who have had a home birth, but not many who have had both and can compare directly. It makes me so excited for a friend who had her first at the hospital (and breastfeeding problems), but is having her second at home this spring. Thank you so much for sharing!!Suchada @ Mama Evehttp://www.mamaeve.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472399563141922488.post-33978861728607724272010-10-25T10:03:56.007-04:002010-10-25T10:03:56.007-04:00All great points!! I did have a doula with me for my hospital birth though, and she gave me so much great advice which really helped about delaying the bath and she actually unwrapped the baby right after they wrapped him so that we could have skin to skin. And she stayed to make sure we got a good start too.

You really have to be on your toes in the hospital to make sure that nothing happens that you don't want. Our home birth was so much more relaxed too, because we weren't on our guard about anything.

Congratulations on your third pregnancy!Lesliehttp://transmit.typepad.com/leslie/2010/10/how-to-start-breastfeeding.htmlnoreply@blogger.com
